GAA for young people
An innovative initiative by the GAA supported by AIB — the GAA Play and Stay introductory blitzes — is aimed at increasing the participation of young people (between seven and eight) in Gaelic games and will take place in 16 Blitz centres in Mayo.

Harrington back behind bars
Shell to Sea protester Maura Harrington was sent back behind bars for a further 14 days for failing to pay fines relating to her imprisonment in March. At the March court sitting in Belmullet, where Harrington denied claims that she slapped a member of An Garda Síochána during a protest at Pullathomas Pier on June 11 2007, she was sentenced to 28 days in prison.
Mayo Sports Partnership courses
A four hour workshop over two evenings on the Code of Ethics and Best Practice in Sport will be held in Westport, on Tuesday January 27 and Wednesday January 28 as part of Mayo Sports Partnerships New Sport Volunteer Training Programme for 2009. The course will start at 7.30pm each evening and finish at 9.30pm.

Support for IT development in local communities
Mayo County Council and the Mayo County Development Board have received three grants from the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources under the BenefIT scheme. This funding will allow for the further roll-out of supports to communities to provide technology training and equipment.
Heart charity appoints nurse for Mayo
Heart charity Croí, the west of Ireland’s cardiology foundation, in collaboration with HSE West’s Mayo Primary, Community, and Continuing Care, has announced the appointment of Ballina nurse Ailish Houlihan to lead an innovative, community based, cardiovascular disease prevention programme for County Mayo. The programme, which will be known as Heart Smart Mayo, will integrate with the primary care teams in Mayo, identifying and targeting those most at risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
Walks around Charlestown
A number of walks have been organised locally in conjunction with Mayo in Motion Walking Month for June. The next walk will be held on Tuesday June 9 at 7.30pm. The meeting place is Callow Lake Car Park. All are welcome.
Amalgamation sees Fianna Fáil establish new cumann in Castlebar
The Fianna Fáil party in Castlebar saw the establishment of a new cumann in the town this week. On Monday evening a new Castlebar Fianna Fáil cumann was established when the Mícheál Ó Moráin and the Johnny Jordan cumainn amalgamated at a meeting in the Welcome Inn Hotel. But the amalgamation still leaves the Castlebar town cumann as a separate entity.
